Boswellia rivae
Frankincense
Powerfully Resinous,
Dark, Intense...
Hailing from Ethiopia, this essential oil is a powerful asset to the perfumer’s toolkit. It is known for its intensely resinous, woody, balsamic, and darkly incensey notes. The trees grow in Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya, and are most commonly harvested in the Ogaden region of Ethiopia, where large, untapped populations are suspected. It prefers lowland to mid-elevation areas and is known locally as “Ogaden-Type” frankincense or “Mirafur.”
Where it
comes from
Unlike most frankincense species, the B. rivae trees are not tapped. Instead, the naturally exuded resins are collected locally by nomadic pastoralists and villagers near the trees. Our resin comes from a cooperative of collectors in the southern Ogaden, near the town of Shilabo. The project brings extra income to traditionally marginalized communities, without disrupting the traditional pastoral lifestyle prevalent in the Ogaden.
